Who is RDX TECHNOLOGIES?

RDX Technologies is a New Zealand-owned defence technology company specialising in advanced weapon sound simulation systems. Our patented technology delivers authentic battlefield acoustics — from small arms through to large-calibre cannon fire — without blanks, pyrotechnics, or live ammunition.

We supply defence forces, law enforcement agencies, and tactical training organisations worldwide. Our systems are currently operational with the New Zealand Army and the Australian Defence Force as part of the Rheinmetall Boxer Programme.

Our Story

It started with one question: “Why doesn’t it sound real?”

RDX was founded by twin brothers Shane and Mark Hugill — raised on a farm in rural New Zealand with a “figure it out” philosophy. As lifelong airsoft enthusiasts and engineers, one question kept driving them: while modern simulation systems could replicate the look and feel of weapons, the sound was missing.

That frustration became an obsession. Working out of a small workshop, Shane and Mark began experimenting with every sound technology they could get their hands on. Through relentless testing, trial, and a fair amount of Kiwi ingenuity, they developed a patented sound simulation system that is now trusted by military and law enforcement organisations around the world.

What started as a passion project between two brothers has become a defence technology company pushing the boundaries of operational simulation — and we’re only getting started.

Our Mission

Real Sound. Real Training. Real Results.

RDX develops simulation technology built around a single principle: if training doesn’t feel real, it doesn’t build readiness.

Our systems are designed to close the gap between simulation and reality — delivering the sensory experience of live fire without the cost, risk, or logistical burden of conventional ammunition. Whether supporting a large-scale military exercise or a tactical law enforcement training programme, RDX systems are built to perform.

  • Defence Forces – Scalable simulation systems for military training, from individual small arms operators through to armoured vehicle crews. Currently operational with the New Zealand Army and Australian Defence Force.
  • Law Enforcement – Sensory-rich training environments that build muscle memory and decision-making confidence without the overhead of live fire facilities.
  • Tactical & Airsoft – Professional-grade simulation for tactical training communities and serious airsoft operators who demand the highest level of realism.

Meet the Founders

Shane Hugill — Co-Founder, Firmware & Electronics
Shane leads firmware development and electronics design at RDX. With a background in industrial electronics, he brings the technical precision required to build reliable, field-ready simulation systems.

Mark Hugill — Co-Founder, Hardware & Mechanical Design
Mark drives hardware engineering and mechanical design at RDX. His hands-on approach to problem solving — rooted in years of industrial engineering experience — ensures every RDX product is built to perform in demanding operational environments.

Together, they’ve built a team capable of developing technology from every angle — from firmware and electronics through to mechanical design and field testing. RDX grew from a farming upbringing and careers in industrial electronics, shaped by a philosophy of perseverance, innovation, and self-driven problem-solving.
